Safety Net
What is it?
Child & Family Guidance Center recognizes that teens may be dealing with depression, low self esteem, and high-risk behaviors such as: truancy, delinquency, violence, and teen pregnancy.
The Safety Net team is an additional resource and support system for school staff and students.
Who is it For?
Services are provided in 24 middle and high school campuses in Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Denton, and Plano Independent School Districts.
Safety Net Services
Safety Net consists of:
Prevention education groups
One-on-one skills training for youth
Community education
Referral services for comprehensive care options
Safety Net utilizes a research-based curriculum entitled, "Positive Action," which teaches resiliency and social competency skills including*:
Communication
Decision making
Goal-setting
Stress & Anger management
Problem solving
Resisting peer pressure
* The curriculum is approved by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - a branch of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
This service model allows Child & Family to maintain our program goals to:
Spread awareness of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and their impacts on health
Teach positive ways to avoid the use and misuse of substances
Aid adolescents and their families in finding solutions to life-challenging issues while encouraging and supporting their continued success and healthy decision making
During the summer months, Safety Net partners with community organizations to provide prevention programming to youth.
The Safety Net Program is also available for presentations on the following topics:
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD)
presentations include information about trending ATOD use and abuse among adolescents, long and short term consequences of use and abuse, laws surrounding use, etc.
Substance use prevention and intervention among youth
presentations include information on drug and alcohol prevention, as well as drug use and abuse
Behavioral health promotion
presentations include a variety of topics for adolescents (stress, anxiety, etc)
Parenting presentations include
Parenting 101- how to talk to your kids about drugs
